This Little Light of Mine
By Shelly Thompson
I learned a childhood song in Sunday school…
This little light of mine.
With small fingers and a big heart, I would point toward heaven and without even knowing it…make a childlike promise to God that I would be His light.
Years would pass before I began to understand the second verse…
Don’t let satan blow it out… “NO! I am going to let it shine.”
Because as we journey on this life…we get busy…things go wrong…we stop praying…we stop reading the Word…we stop seeking God…the enemy attacks and…(John 10:10)
Our light, and our heart…can go ‘under a bushel’...
In despair…in depression…in feeling deserted…
In darkness.
That darkness never stops God from doing the impossible. (Luke 18:27)
That doesn’t mean He will magically change our situation or circumstance. Those seasons may stay the same for a long period of time…but He can change our heart. (Ezekiel 36:26, 27)
…and in the face of anything, we can know that OUR God is so great and so mighty (Psalm 147:5)…there’s nothing He cannot do (another Sunday school song)…including taking us out from under the bushel…regardless of circumstance. (Joshua 1:9)
Transforming our hearts and lives to the likeness of His son, Jesus Christ.
And regardless of circumstance, with compassion and praise…
Take His light to others…
Wherever they may be…
Who need to know…
Jesus…
Who need to visit…
The foot of the cross…
Who need a light…
In this sometimes dark world…
To remove their bushel…
Today, I am grateful for many things…seasons of hard times...seasons of plenty…seasons of despair…seasons of hope…seasons of sadness…seasons of joy…
But mostly…
I am grateful for Jesus.
The power in His name.
The peace in His shelter.
The restoration in His grace.
The forgiveness in His blood.
The life in His resurrection.
The promise of eternal salvation.
The gift of His light…in my heart…
So that I can let it shine…until Jesus comes.
By His Grace, removing bushels one at a time…
Grateful..that Jesus light can never be snuffed out… “NO!”
Because…I am going to let it shine, let it shine, let it shine, let it shine…(Matthew 5:16)...until Jesus comes.
Take heart in the promises of God (Isaiah 41:10)…not in things of this world, but in Christ…the light that shines forever. Amen
In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. Matthew 5:16
Keeping my Sunday school promise.
