My grandma had this special drawer in her house where she kept what she called 'odds and ends'. Sometimes, we would find the most unique things in her odds and ends drawer. I think it was her catch all for busy days. When she wasn't sure what to do with something...it was filed in the odds and ends drawer. She probably had 8,000 band-aids, an old packet of vintage kool aid, $1,000 in pennies, thread, shoe polish, pens, tape, cut out recipes, unidentified family photos, and probably the cure for the common cold stashed in her odds and ends drawer!
As we close this issue, this is our odds and ends page. Things that we think are worthwhile, but they didn't make it into an article, so they're here...on the odds and ends page. Clearly unique to our online magazine, but we like to be different. We've got a few more ideas for decorating by incorporating tins; creating a 'Devotion Jar' as a gift; and a few amazing recipes...including the Lunch Lady Brownies!
We hope this issue has touched your heart, and inspired you to create memories in your home. Please feel free to send us your comments, thoughts, and suggestions by clicking here. We're featuring this a SECOND TIME because it was SO POPULAR!
Hats off...or should that be Hankies off to Black Barn Vintage, owned by Mike and Jama Black. Jama created this awesome wreath using her grandmother's hankies. Making this item even more special she used an embroidery hoop owned by her mother. It looks stunning and what a great keepsake for generations. PAINTING TIP! YOU'LL NEVER FORGET THIS!
Using Architectural Elements for a Blank Wall
Ready to be creative? It's so much fun to collect different architectural elements, large and small, and see how you can arrange them for a grouping. The grouping can be hanging on a wall or window area, or on a table or coffee table with a tray or books. When you see those unique architectural elements that catch your eye...or have a story (like, who would not love having a piece of an old 1800's farmhouse)...pick them up and try using them in a fun grouping.
DID YOU DO AN ARCHITECTURAL GROUPING? WE WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOUR PHOTO! WE MIGHT USE IT IN AN UPCOMING ISSUE AND YOU COULD WIN OUR PRIZE CANDLE PACKAGE FROM THE 5TH STREET CANDLE CO. Submit your photo here!

It's the details!
The difference of elevating to the next level is always the little, tiny, details! I always look at my finished grouping or design at least three times to see if there's something that can be added for that visual appeal that makes people love it! This is especially true in an entryway, where guests will enter.
Once you've started, you'll find your using small things you wouldn't normally use... perhaps to hold a picture, or place on top of a book. You'll constantly be thinking to yourself...'How can I use that?'...and that's a good thing! |
Ideas for creating small vignettes
These are basically the same items, with a few variations. The focus of one is the stack of vintage books, the focus of the second is things underneath the cloche. It's fun and interesting to gather a few favorite items, perhaps that those small items that have meaning, and see the different ways you can group them. Your own creativity will amaze you!
