You've heard the phrase many times 'curb appeal'. But, the front door is where it's at for greeting guests and getting them in that holiday mood before they come in your home. It's been said the door to your home should be a reflection of the people behind the door. It's Christmas...let your door speak volumes to your guests. There should be little clues inside your entry way too that share how you celebrate Christmas...maybe some old family photos, grandmother's hankie with some evergreen tucked in it, a small family Christmas keepsake...and absolutely some small wrapped candy! Your guests will feel invited and welcome, ready to enjoy special time in your home during this Christmas season.
Every small detail of your door and entry can play a part in making a statement beyond 'curb appeal' to...Welcome. Since Christmas is rapidly approaching, below are some seasonal examples and ideas for your front door...if you're up for it, even the garage door. Don't forget the Christmas 'Welcome mat'. It may seem a bit cliche, but there are so many adorable and inexpensive 'Welcome' mats. It's a fun way to introduce the family behind the door.

Santa's Coming! This bright red door is perfect for the Christmas season. This family is not only waiting to welcome guests, but it looks like they are hoping Santa Claus will be visiting too!
A rectangle was cut from a lightweight wood panel and wrapped in faux press on wall paper (all the way around). A stain marker (you could also use a faux press on wood board) was then used to create the wood mantel. Small 1x1's were added to the back of the cut out piece. It was then chalk painted and seasoned and a fire was drawn..use your imagination to create your fire...you could use colored chalk for even more effect! Then...the stockings were hung on the faux mantle with care...knowing Santa would soon be there. The wreath, lantern, and poinsettia give balance to the large decoration. The lantern looks beautiful with battery operated candles at night. One variation on this would be to remove the wreath and order wall words online for the top panel of the door that say, "Down the chimney he came...", or whatever words you felt like adding. |
"Santa, You've come to the right place"...that's exactly how you want your guests to feel, like they've come the right place! Notice...the sign is hung on the doorbell, just in case...Santa decides to announce his visit! This is the perfect use for an old frame. The frame is held on with Command Hooks (click here for 11 ways to hang things without using nails!). The Christmas Tree is hot glued onto plexiglas with Command Press holding it to the door. This is a super easy way to give your front door a personal and very welcoming look. Notice the garland hanging over the doorbell. We'll discuss in another photo the use of greenery...easy and the perfect touch!

If you're a little daring and love a touch of vintage...this might give you a few ideas! I love the mix of woodsy pine trees, birch logs, the old wagon, and vintage sled. This is a very personal look showcasing the taste of the homeowners. The metal containers literally scream holiday! This gives you a feeling that you've just entered the Christmas tree lot of a Hallmark movie. Notice the detail of the birch logs tucked into the wagon. What you can't see is the lights. At night this is like an outdoor Christmas tree display. The birch logs could also be wrapped in lights. This display is so inviting. It feels like there should be hot cocoa waiting when you step inside!

Adding to the character of this door are the beautiful wood moldings. It looks elegant, yet with a modern almost farmhouse touch. Let's talk greenery. Most of this decor is greenery. The plaid accent gives a pop of needed color, and the added red Christmas balls tie in perfectly with the laces of the skates. The wreath pulls the entire theme together with the skates as the focal point. Even the black iron handle lends to this design. All the small details make such a difference.
Tip: Many times it's expensive to replace the hardware on a door. There's several products that you can use to paint the handles, locks, and hinges (click here for a tutorial to painting hardware with Rustoleum...be sure to use the exterior Rustoleum!) |
This door has a simple and inexpensive design. It uses an old spray painted frame and Christmas balls and greenery tied with floral wire onto the hook. With the weight of the greenery you will want to use some type of command strip to hold the greenery in place as the door shuts and as the wind blows. The Red Welcome can be found at craft stores, even Walmart carries door 'stickers' this time of year. This allows you to add the door sticker without committing to having it there all year...although it looks very...'Welcoming'.

Tip: Adding any type of Christmas greenery by your front door, or hanging garland gives that perfect Christmas touch. These types of pots can be left out in January so they get more use. During Christmas you can add plaid bows or Christmas decorations and simply remove them after Christmas and allow the woodsy decor to give your front entry that warm and inviting feeling.
