But what a wonderful God we have who surrounds us not only with Himself, but piles high around us on all sides, a great cloud of witnesses, literally way up high in the clouds…getting glimpses of our race as they cheer…sometimes applauding loudly...rising up in the bleachers of heaven and calling our name…as they glimpse our life stadium of earth.
What a beautiful glimpse of our ‘heavenly fan club’ God has given us in this verse. Who is cheering you on? Who is echoing your name from heaven’s bleachers? The next time you see a cloud…remember someone is pulling for you…rooting for your victory…joyously saying your name above the clouds…
Although the Bible does not say this…perhaps those beautiful sunbeams that resonate through the clouds are the eternal smiles of those who have just witnessed a victory…in the stadium of earth. Another soul saved from eternal hell…one day to join the spectators cheering among the clouds.
There’s also another commercial that asks the question…”What’s in our wallet?”…I am wondering…”Who’s in your cloud?”
What a great question to ponder as you look to the sky today…
Prayer—Heavenly Father, we know the battlefield surrounds us. We are thankful that You give us not only the gift of the Holy Spirit, but Your word show us that you surround us with a great cloud of witnesses, cheering us on, pulling for us. May that give us encouragement today as we step out into the earthly arena. May we be bold in sharing You with others. May we show your love and kindness to those You surround us with as we hear the echos of generations of our legacy surrounding us, piled high on all sides, clapping and calling our voices from the clouds of heaven. Thank you, gracious God, for our very great cloud. In Jesus name, Amen.
Who's in Your Cloud?
By Shelly Thompson, Publisher
Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. Hebrews 12:1 KJV
There’s a commercial that has a line in it, “We’ve got you covered.” As earthly things go, maybe they do, but for real coverage…Hebrews 12:1 shows us that God really has us covered…by our great cloud. This does not in any way reference any type of cloud used for your iPhone storage…this is a pure heavenly cloud. Even as a little girl I loved clouds. They seemed so high, majestic, moving about ‘light as air’ in never ending blue skies. Sometimes when the sun peeks through them just right…they look like magnificent beams shining down from heaven. There is great meaning in Hebrews 12:1…our cloud is significant. Just as clouds cover the earth, our great cloud covers us. God truly “has us covered”.
The word cloud is translated from the Greek word nephos. In ancient Greece (way, way back), at stadiums or arenas where sporting events were held, the top row of seating or bleachers was very, very high up in the air (really high). Although you couldn’t store your ancient stone photos known to be in the ‘cloud’, you could purchase your seat…in the ‘cloud section’. Meaning you would be sitting very, very high up in the air…you were known to be ‘sitting in the clouds’ at these ancient events if your seat was in the top row. When translated in the context of this verse, there is an additional meaning. In reading about this verse, I found the following information –
The phrase “compassed about” is taken from the word peikeimenai, which is a compound of the words peri and keimai. The word peri means around, as to be completely encircled by something. The second part of the word, keimai, means to lie down. When these two words are compounded into one word, they mean to lie around, as if something has been piled high and is lying all around you on every side. This portrays the idea of being completely encircled by something that is stacked high on every side.
Our great cloud of witnesses is piled high, encircling us, covering us like a blanket on all sides as we persevere (or fight) to finish our race and win the victory. In this verse, the Bible even describes ‘the race’, a life marathon, as spectators of the great cloud watch. They cheer. They applaud. They give whoops and whistles as we jump over hurdles placed by the enemy. All eyes are on us…our great cloud is encircling us, completely covering us as we keep inching towards the finish line. As we proclaim the victory they have already won. This is no easy battle, but one that requires discipline, patience, and perseverance. It is truly a fight to the finish. It is the fight of a lifetime. It determines our eternal destination.
