Welcome to 5th Street.
Welcome! I am glad you've found this quaint little neighborhood tucked away in Highland Park in Des Moines, Iowa. It's were I grew up in 'The House on 5th Street'. This is where my story began. My foundation of faith was planted here. My grandparents lived four houses away from our home, and my great grandparents lived a few more houses up from them. There's so much history on the big hill of 5th Street. I've walked a thousand miles on that big hill in my childhood visiting my grandparents and the neighbors. We'll get to that later. Growing up in The House on 5th Street was like living in the fictional city of Mayberry. If you can, visualize the tidy well manicured lawns of 5th Street, with small cozy homes lining the big hill...porches where you were always welcome and neighbors who visited over coffee and sweet tea as flags waved in the breeze. You're in the right spot, welcome to my childhood neighborhood.
In my book 'Heart of a Warrior - A Legacy of Faith' I had the amazing honor to introduce you to the Warrior’s of 5th Street. A special group of older women, mostly widows, God placed there to help raise two young girls. My mom was misdiagnosed when I was young and finally, even institutionalized. But God, had given us a tribe. Among these faithful sweet women (I refer to them as the Aunt Bea’s of Mayberry in ‘Heart of a Warrior') was my sweet grandmother (Millie McKeever-Stout) and my grandfather, just four houses away. As my Dad spent time at the hospital with my mom, my grandparents, and God’s faithful Warrior’s of 5th Street...the Aunt Bea’s, helped raise two young girls during life's early years. Each devotion in ‘Heart of a Warrior - A Legacy of Faith', introduces you to these women of 5th Street sharing their story in a tiny version of a real life Mayberry, where God moved mountains...in the ordinary small acts of His Warrior’s.
The 5th Street Candle Collection was created to share the stories of the women of 5th Street from the book ‘Heart of a Warrior’, now in its sixth printing (click here to learn more here about 'Heart of a Warrior - A Legacy of Faith). These one-of-a-kind unique candles bring the devotions in 'Heart of a Warrior' to life. Most of the candles were created from generations of family recipes by a skilled local artesian candlemaker. She lovingly adapted the recipes I would give her into candles. Smelling the fragrances...was just like going back to 5th Street. On each candle you'll find a simple brown tag with the recipe the candle was created from and the devotional back story behind the candle filled with encouragement and hope. These are flames of faith passed down from generations. There's a link on our website to learn even more about the faithful women of 5th Street under 'candle stories'. These candles light the flame of hope and encouragement.

Welcome Home Candle
Our Welcome Home Candle contains my grandmother's recipe for homemade pecan rolls. These are delicious and were a staple in our 5th Street neighborhood. The fragrance of Welcome Home is a blend of maple, butterscotch, and a dash of vintage leather to offer a warm welcoming fragrance. The cream and faded blue floral tie on the candle resembles an old family quilt. The family photo on the front is three generations of my family taken in 1964.

Christmas on 5th Street Candle
Christmas on 5th Street smells like Christmas in a jar. The wonderful fragrance of fraser fir will fill your home with the fresh sent of woodland pine trees. This is a great Christmas candle, or for those who love the fresh smell of the woodlands. The recipe is our Christmas Eve Oatmeal cookies. Perfect anytime. Millie's Warm Apple Cobbler Candle is perfect for any day of the year. Its warm notes of apples, brown sugar, and maple will make any day better. The red and white tie holding the candle back story and recipe give the candle a cheerful look. The family photo on the candle is Shelly and her grandmother, Millie McKeever, in 1967. Esther's Hazelnut Coffee Candle
Esther's Hazelnut Coffee Candle is a coffee lover's dream. Your home will have the fragrant aroma of coffee without having to brew a thing. The warm touch of hazelnut and cream makes this candle delightful. The recipe on the tag is Esther's Coffee Cake. The coffee cake is the perfect for serving with hazelnut coffee...or any coffee. Millie McKeever's Sugar Donut Candle
Millie McKeever's Sugar Donut Candle was our very first candle. My grandmother used to bring homeade donuts down our back alley covered with her apron or a ta towel every Saturday. They were delicious! This candle has notes of vanilla, sugar, and a very light hint of nutmeg. Her sugar donut recipe is on the candle tag, so you can create the amazing delights in your home, perhaps even with your own family. The family photo on the candle is Millie McKeever in 1939 at her clothesline. The tie on the candle has been carefully selected to resemble the actual design of her apron in the photo. Cost $24.00.
