An Open Door to God

 Confession…

…I love hallways…while many love a special room in their home, I am fond of the hallway. I love the steps that quietly echo in the hallway telling life stories…milestones in the making…steps in awe as they carry a new baby…a toddlers clumsy first steps… tip toeing footsteps early Christmas morning…laughing and noisy teenagers and friends…steps loudly racing to the kitchen for dinner…excited steps filled with anticipation on graduation day…the list of stories the steps the hallway holds is endless. Hallways contain the steps of ‘comings and goings’…steps of lives being lived and faintly heard steps of the past in quiet moments of reflection.

As we restored our circa 1875 bank building in Walnut, Iowa, I was drawn to the long hallway on the upper floor that was once lined with boarding rooms. I often wondered as I walked through the hallway…where the steps had led the lives there before mine. As we began to renovate the hallway, we learned there was a set of covered pocket doors, which was used as an exit during illegal gambling back in the early 1900’s. Those steps would have been hasty get-a-way hallway steps, unlike my thoughtful and quiet steps to discover the history of those before me.

While the steps in that hallway were long gone with the building being vacant for over a decade, the hallway was now filled with the steps of me and my family renovating…and…the steps of my first grandlittle. While he wasn’t doing illegal gambling, he definitely took hasty steps running up and down the long hallway. That’s been almost ten years ago now, but when it’s quiet…I can still hear the echo of his 4-year-old feet running excitedly down the hallway proudly offering his ‘help’ to us. He soon learned that the hallway was a great raceway for his cars and trucks. The long hallway quickly became a favorite place for him to play. In the quiet times…I still see the four-year-old in the hallway…my hearts memories like to linger there…in the hallway.

One day…he taught me a lesson in the hallway I will never forget…

Being a brave little man of 4…he always wanted me to accompany him to the restroom in that big building. However, when he turned 5 he boldly informed me that I no longer needed to go in with him. As I left the restroom door and walked down the hallway, before I got very far…I heard his little voice say, “Come stand in the hallway”…I walked back and stood in the hallway outside the door. He then had a last request to prove his new found bravery – in his quietest voice he said, “I only want to see your feet. Not all of you.” It was a funny moment that made me silently laugh in the hallway leaning back so I could maintain my ‘feet showing only’ position in the doorway. But as I stood there, I realized…

…sometimes that’s how we treat God. We say to the Lord, “Stay outside of my life…I only want to see Your feet. I need my privacy. I can handle things and make my decisions. I just need to see Your feet to know your there, but I don’t need you right now. I’ll let you know when I do.” How those words must hurt the heart of our Creator. How he must long to be the REASON for our bravery…but often we only want to…see His feet.

He has a plan and purpose for our life, yet sometimes we get off course…we head for the wrong room. We make our plans in our mind and we trust our decisions…we make our own way and determine our own steps…our ‘comings and goings’. He longs to direct all of our steps we make in the hallway as we move about…the ‘comings and goings’ of our lives (Psalms 121:8), He wants to show us the direction our steps should take us (Proverbs 16:9), He will make our steps firm (Psalm 37:23), He wants us to walk with decency (Romans 13:13).

It’s truly amazing…

…there was an unknown moment that it was just God and you…

Just you and Him…

Nothing else…as He gazed at you…

He looked upon you and prepared your steps ahead of time…like my listening for echoes of steps in the hallway…your steps are echoes to God because He already knows (Ephesians 2:10)…

…You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed. Psalm 139:16

God saw you…before your feet took one step in any hallway…He knew, good or bad, where you’d be at this very moment…
He knew you would read these words…on this day…at this time…

His plans were laid out for your life before a single day had passed…

He sees the beginning and the end of your day each morning…of your very life…

He desires to be invited in…not standing in the hallway ‘feet only’…

He wants to be actively involved in every room…
…in every space of your heart…

He created you…gazed upon you…planned every detail…every hallway story you will ever know…

He knew first.

Beloved, He knows…the words your heart longs to tell Him…your fears…your dreams…your doubts…your hurt…your worries…your sleepless nights…He knows…

He knew from the moment He gazed upon you…

You can only step into this day…this life…knowing God is directing your steps…in the hallway and everywhere else He leads you, by receiving His best gift to you…His only son, Jesus Christ. God created you…gazed upon you…directed your steps…and then sent His only son to die…for you.

Our lives get busy and our hallway moments rush by so quickly. Have you accidentally…or purposefully…moved Him into your hallway? It’s so easy to do. If so, today, if you hear His voice…invite Him in from the hallway. Welcome His son into your heart. His love, guidance, and direction belong IN your life, not tucked away just for a time of need. You have a wide place for my steps under me, and my feet did not slip. Psalm 18:36. And, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. Ephesians 6:15.

Put on the shoes of God’s grace and peace.. He will direct your path…there will be no hallway in life His love can’t reach and change or redirect your steps…with sounds of righteous steps that will echo throughout eternity.
